Dr. Jeff addresses whether sleeping with wet hair can cause dandruff. Jennifer: Good morning. Dr. Jeff: Good morning Jennifer. Jennifer: So Dr. Jeff, the other day one of my friends said to me do you ever sleep with your hair wet. And I said well sometimes, why? And she said that’s how you get dandruff. And I’m not entirely convinced that is how you get dandruff, so I’d really like to know what the causes really are. Dr. Jeff: Yeah that is not how you get dandruff. Dandruff is actually caused by a yeast. There are a couple things that can lead to that. One of them is infrequent hair washing. A lot of people think that actually if you wash your hair frequently you’re going to get dry itchy scalp. Actually that’s not what happens; it’s the opposite. When the oils build up on your scalp that can cause the yeast to start growing there and cause the dandruff. Easy to take care of, good hygiene, you can use whatever shampoo you like to use and just clean your hair regularly and clean your scalp with that. If you do happen to get itchy, flaky scalp, any of the dandruff shampoos that are over the counter are usually really good. Selsun Blue works really well, so it’s easy to treat and not too expensive.
